Matthjis Strietman

Originally a Latin American Development specialist, Matthjis has managed and co-operated with development projects in Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia and the Philippines, working in fields ranging from mangrove, rainforest and freshwater conservation, to environmental education, biodiversity surveys, anthropological research (with the Agta tribe) and local economic development in urban and rural areas. His primary interest is freshwater ecology and he was formerly an aquarist at Zoological Society of London where he was responsible for maintaining a variety of freshwater and marine animals. His role also involved the maintenance of the endangered species breeding programme, which included many threatened pupfish and killifish from Central America, Europe and the Middle East. His personal passion lies in the giant wetland wilderness known as the Brazilian Pantanal where he has documented many underwater habitats and their respective ichthyofauna.
